This post on Anxiety: A Holistic Approach views anxiety as a normal, natural response to unresolved, emotionally charged, stress-response cycles (UEC-SRC). It’s not a mental disorder. This post also describes the symptoms of anxiety and how they increase over time. It also acknowledges that numbing out your anxiety doesn’t resolve it. Anxiety is your friend. It wants to resolve your unresolved, emotionally charged, stress-response cycles. This post ends with a call to action about learning how to resolve your anxiety in a holistic way.
Anxiety Isn’t a Mental Disorder. It’s a Normal, Natural, Healthy Response
Anxiety isn’t a mental disorder. It’s not a symptom to medicate. Neither is it just how you are. You are not your anxiety. With a holistic approach, I’ve helped hundreds of clients resolve their anxiety. I can help you too.
Anxiety is a normal, natural, healthy response to what you’ve experienced. It’s due to experiencing a load of stress. The load of stress you’re carrying is an accumulation of unresolved, emotionally charged, stress-response cycles (UEC-SRC).
Normal, natural stress response cycles move through six phases: baseline, stimulus, response, resolution, recovery, and return to baseline. When stress-response cycles happen at a pace that interferes with the resolution, recovery, and return to baseline phases of the cycle, you accumulate unresolved, emotionally charged stress-response cycles (UEC-SRC). As you accumulate more of these cycles, you begin to experience symptoms of anxiety.
The Symptoms of Anxiety
The symptoms of anxiety increase over time as unresolved, emotionally charged, stress-response cycles accumulate. Low-level symptoms can include feeling antsy, impatient, easily annoyed, and tired. They can also include having difficulty going to sleep, waking up early, and having racing thoughts that interfere with going back to sleep.
Moderate symptoms often include more intense versions of the low-level symptoms. Additionally, moderate symptoms can show up as increased worrying, having your first panic attack, fearing having another panic attack, thinking others are thinking bad things about you, and more.
High-level symptoms show up as thoughts about death and dying, impaired ability to do your activities of daily living, suicidal thoughts, and a breakdown that leads to being hospitalized.
Numbing Your Anxiety Doesn’t Resolve It
Anxiety doesn’t resolve by numbing it. Numbing yourself with alcohol, CBD, pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, doom scrolling, binge watching shows, masturbating, frequent sex, nightclubbing, high-risk activities, and other distractions not only prevents resolving your anxiety, but it also prolongs and increases your anxiety. Increased anxiety often leads to increasing the amounts of whatever you’re taking to numb your anxiety. Increasing what you do to numb yourself often has serious, life-threatening consequences.
Your Symptoms Aren’t The Problem
Your symptoms aren’t the problem. Stop trying to make them go away. They’re your friends. Like the check engine light on your car, your symptoms are your friends letting you know that you aren’t okay. Your health is at risk, and you need to look “under the hood” and do something about it.
Numbing yourself out so you don’t feel your anxiety is like cutting the wires to your car’s check engine light. You still have a problem “under the hood”. If ignored, that problem will lead to a breakdown.
Your unresolved stress-response cycles want to resolve. That’s right. They want to resolve and stop producing your anxiety. Those unresolved cycles are begging you to stop numbing and avoiding your anxiety. It’s time to face it, address it, and learn how to resolve it.
