Depression, like anxiety, is a cluster of symptoms. It’s not the problem. What causes it is the problem. When the underlying cause is identified and addressed, your symptoms of depression resolve.
First, know this. Depression is not caused by a “pharmaceutical deficiency.” Medication does not cure depression. It reduces its intensity. Depression medications have both benefits and risks.
Second, we need to rule out any physiological causes of your depression. Your primary care provider does this. Depression can be caused by heart problems, genes, medications, substance misuse, and serious illness.
Once physiological causes are ruled out, the most common cause of depression is stress, especially traumatic stress. Stress can seriously damage the health of your human spirit, body, mind, and relationships.
Relationship issues, the death of a loved one, loss of a job, retirement, and growing old can also cause depression.
You can resolve your depression or at least manage it better. Together we’ll find and address the causes of your depression, so you can live a healthier, happier life, and realize your dreams.
P.S. (I’m a survivor of major depression and have recovered.)
